#20: 300 (2006) The Image: The stylized nature of the poster lets you know what to expect from the film: A bunch of Spartans fight and die, and the film is going to make that look as cool as possible. That was the sound of fans collective "gulp." Ironically, Niles originally intended the story as a film but created the comic when met with lack of interest in film production. And he brought the writer of that film on to rewrite the script, which had previously met Niles' approval. David Slade was picked to direct the movie, having recently garnered attention for the low budget, psychological thriller Hard Candy. As well as the concerns of fans as to whether the motion picture would remain true to the unforgiving and unrelenting blood, gore and violence of the source material. So the constant pressure of reviving the subgenre weighed on this film. The vampire flick, like many of the subdivisions of genre films, is constantly deemed "dead" and remains so until the next inventive and unique film of its kind breaks through. The Context: While every comic book under the sun is being produced into a film these days, Steve Niles' distinctly bloody and stylized tale about a vampire siege in Alaska is unlike any other. The red almost acts as a filter through which we are seeing the image, as if we are viewing this scene through red colored eyes. The black of night from which the character appears to emerge also houses the scribble-like text of the title that promises this to be a rough and unusual experience. The coloring is interesting in that the red appears to stand in for where white would be and the black is speckled behind the vampires head, as if standing in for the red that would be blood. But it's really the color scheme that does the job here. The vampire's gaping, fanged mouth is cool even though we are unsure whether it is open in satisfaction, pain or intimidation. It is one of the only posters that has no white in it anywhere. Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter are producing for Berlanti/Schechter Films, with Lopez, McQuiston, and Michael McGrath serving as executive producers.#21: 30 Days of Night (2007) The Image: Through the use of a violent image, color and style, this poster manages to create a tone of ferocity, blood and death that the film promises to deliver on.
