I'm the grocery manager at one of the local stores (not Kroger), and I agree with all of the comments here so far. Kroger wants that marketshare that’s in Richmond because they’ve seen how insane the grocery retail scene is over there and Wegman’s either has or is building a new distribution center in Hanover County so Wegman’s is looking to expand in Virginia big time in the coming years.Ĭostco is looking to set up shop here in Roanoke but finding land is an issue. I will always say that I would be thru the moon if we were ever to get a Publix (which is rumored to be looking at Roanoke since they are opening a distribution center in Greensboro) and Wegman’s is just heaven! Ol man CEO McMillian is too worried about profits to invest and bring the older stores up to date and also the Mid-Atlantic leadership isnt too pressed about the stores either and I will damn say the local Union isnt worried either. Sadly all the stores make serious profits but compare the said stores I mentioned to stores like Lakeside, Spartan Square, Towers, Crossroads (Rutger Sq), Hollins, the Lynchburg locations…it’s night and day. Richmond and the Tidewater area stands to make the most money for the company now. Kroger moved out of Roanoke for a reason. That is one mismanaged company and now that Im out of that bubble, I can honestly say that Kroger does not even remotely care.

The good stores you want to shop at are: Westlake, Tanglewood, Bonsack, Cave Spring, Brambleton Ave (old Harris Teeter), Blacksburg (by VT) and that’s it. *former Kroger employee here…Lemme tell you. Who knows, though? We ARE getting a Chili's after how many years!

I don't think it would ever fly here in Roanoke - NOVA prices, flipping HUGE stores that have everything from Wegman's branded meat, full bakeries, hot food options - but it's a nice dream. Dad loves Food Lion, he hits one certain store and thinks the world of the staff and the selection. They stopped carrying a brand of carbonated water he loved (their house brand), and when he asked questions about it, he just got blank looks and "WTF do you want us to do?" No, he wasn't complaining, just trying to see if they'd be getting more in / how he could get some. They DO do some great things for the community, but it seems like, lately, it's been all profit, all the time. My husband and I are huge fans of a chain called Wegman's, mostly in the NOVA area, though there's one in Charlottesville now (not as good as the other ones, though).
